Tembisa informal settlement goes dark as illegal connections are removed

Ekurhuleni loses close to R800-million a year in unaccounted electricity usage.

Illegally connected power cables, largely running underground at Ehlanzeni and Vusimuzi Informal Settlement in Tembisa, have been removed this week to reduce power supply interruptions in the area and surroundings.

“An estimated 1 800 unlawful connections were discovered which were responsible for overloading the network, which in turn caused persisting service interruptions,” said Themba Gadebe, Metro spokesperson.

Illegal cables loaded onto a truck after they were removed in Ehlanzeni and Vusimuzi Informal Settlement.

Ekurhuleni loses close to R800-million a year in unaccounted for electricity caused by nearly 3 500 illegal power connections across the city.

“This act is not only stealing from the state but also poses a great danger to children who use open spaces to play,” said Gadebe.

Residents are encouraged to report any illegal connections or suspicious behaviour to the municipal call centre on 086 054 3000.
