Tembisa community takes land by force near Modderfontein Road

He said people were encouraged to come back on March 17 to be allocated with long-awaited stands

Members of the Tembisa community forcefully occupied vacant land at the corner of Modderfontein Road and Andrew Mapheto Drive.

On March 11, scores of residents gave themselves a piece of land which they claim belongs to the community.

Rabie Ridge SAPS Captain Mofana Masela said leaders in the community told their followers that if police don’t have a court interdict at hand they cannot prevent them from taking over the land. They emphasised that police must come with documents and without an eviction order, the police must leave them alone.

“They allege that another land that belongs to them is the one behind Phumulani Mall and they have maps of identified pieces of land they want to take over.

“The invaders have all the information. Municipality officials are also leaders in the invading and they give directives to make sure the land is available to them – community land invaders,” said Masela.

He said people were encouraged to come back on March 17 to be allocated with long-awaited stands.

The invaders said they are tired of paying expensive rent.

Masela said authorities must do something to prevent this forceful land occupation or else there is a possibility of seeing yet another unplanned village there next week.
