UPDATE: Peaceful taxi protest ends at Germiston Civic Centre

The memorandum was delivered to the MMC for transport planning

The taxi strike that saw traffic disrupted on parts of the R21, R24 and N3 highways on Tuesday morning seems to be over.

Minibus taxis were seen moving slow on these highways causing delays due to a planned strike.

Passengers were left stranded and returned home while the taxi drivers headed for Germiston Civic Centre to deliver a memorandum with a list of their demands and grievances.

“The memorandum was delivered to the MMC for transport planning, Clr Petrus Mabunda after the taxi drivers gathered and sang revolutionary songs outside the centre,” said EMPD spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng.

“We monitored the strike very closely from start to finish together with the police, Gauteng Traffic Police, National Traffic Police and JMPD. Once the memorandum was delivered we escorted the minibuses back to the various highways.”

Mokheseng also said there was no violence.

“No property was damaged and nobody was hurt during the protest as it wasn’t violent, he concluded.
