Sebenza Community Policing Forum (SCPF) was nominated in the most effective community policing forum category at the recent Gauteng Department of Community Safety Awards and won second place.

The awards were hosted by the Gauteng Department of Community Safety on February 22 at Johannesburg City Hall. The ceremony was part of Gauteng’s safety month programme, which is aimed at recognising and acknowledging the outstanding contribution made by Gauteng’s law enforcement agencies and social partners in improving the safety and security of the province’s citizens.

Sebenza SAPS CPF chairperson Andrew Mosesi said he was humbled by the nomination. The shortlist was generated from data produced from the monitoring and evaluation tool for CPFs.

“The selection process looked at which functions were being fulfilled by the CPF. I am passionate about community safety and civilian oversight over the police. I didn’t expect an award for doing something that is close to my heart,” said Mosesi.

“Thanks to the CPF team, the station commander, the visible policing unit, head and sector managers for the support and working together with the community.”

Sebenza CPF was nominated in the same category with KwaThema CPF and Rietgat CPF. KwaThema took first place.

Mosesi urged other police stations to take part in the awards.

“The more competition we have, the more community safety ideas we will come up with. The fight against crime needs us all,” he said.

The most effective CPF category looked at full complements of the executive committee; full subforums: youth desk, victim empowerment centre and patrollers; monthly meetings; annual programmes of action implemented; cluster participation and stakeholder partnerships.
