EMPD operations dropped by half in 2017 – DA

In 2017 the EMPD made 4 068 arrests compared to the 7 058 in 2016

Crime prevention efforts and arrests by the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) have decreased by almost half in 2017 from 2016.

This is according to answers given by the MMC of community safety, Clr Vivian Chauke, at the February council meeting, following questions submitted by Clr Jaco Terblanche.

Crime prevention operations dropped to 60 in 2017 from 107 in 2016, while joint crime prevention operations decreased to 56 in 2017 from 102 in 2016.

Accident hotspot operations dropped to 59 from 107, social crime to 42 from 62 and by-law enforcement to 42 from 62.

In 2017 the EMPD made 4 068 arrests compared to 7 058 in 2016.

“These statistics, as provided by the MMC, display that very little was done in the City of Ekurhuleni to protect the city’s residents. It is also shocking that the joint crime prevention ventures between the EMPD and the South African Police Services also decreased last year,” Terblanche said.
