Wheelie bins: what’s the point?

'They won’t pick up his bags, but they fetch mine from the wheelie bin' - Croydon resident

When the Kempton Park wheelie bin roll-out started last year, the plan was to eliminate black bags by March 5, 2018. Residents were told that by this date their black bags would no longer be collected.

On Thursday morning, Croydon resident Charles (71) sent photos to Express, describing them as “ironic”.

The photos show a refuse collector opening a wheelie bin, removing the black bag inside and carrying it to the refuse removal truck.

The employee carries the bag to the refuse removal truck, which is supposed to be equipped to pick up wheelie bins.

“The ironic part, of course, is that they go into the bin and lift the black bag out because it’s easier than using the truck,” Charles told Express.

In a previous interview, the DA shadow MMC for environmental development and waste management, Ald André du Plessis, said not all of Kempton Park’s refuse removal trucks were equipped to pick up wheelie bins yet.

Charles said his area’s refuse is supposed to be removed on Wednesdays. “Since the new schedule, they have never managed to make it on a Wednesday.”

He added that his neighbour’s bags weren’t removed. This, to Charles, added to the irony of the situation.

“They won’t pick up his bags, but they fetch mine themselves from the wheelie bin.”
