It has been 24 hours since John Smith (78) was last seen and his family is distraught.

The elderly man went for a walk yesterday (April 10) at around 10.30am and did not return to his Croydon home, said his daughter Gaenor Smith.

Gaenor said her dad had a terrible memory. “He has what we think might be dementia or Alzheimer’s.”

She added that her missing dad was relatively fit and was a Comrades runner year ago.

“He shuffles his way around and is quite well-known around the area.”

The distraught daughter described Smith as a very friendly and kind person. “He speaks English and doesn’t understand Afrikaans.”

“I really hope that someone has seen him,” she added.

Smith lives with his wife in a garden cottage at his daughter’s house in Croydon.

“My mom is absolutely besides herself. All kinds of things are running through her mind, it’s absolutely terrifying.”

Smith was last seen wearing blue jeans, a navy polo shirt, red and black trainers with a khaki jacket. He has green eyes and grey hair, is around 1.65m tall and weighs about 85kg.

A missing persons case has been opened with Sebenza SAPS.

Anyone with information can contact Gaenor on 082 905 6445 or the police on 10111
