Johannesburg High Court sentenced two murderers, who shot and killed Sidney Monareng and his friend Mhlanganeni, to life imprisonment on March 14.
Rabie Ridge SAPS communications officer Captain Mofana Masela said Skhova Michael Khumalo and Bongane Honest Ngwenya were sentenced to life in prison for the murders they committed in Kanana Section.
“On July 2, 2017, at about 3am, two innocent men were fatally shot at Kanana.
“It is alleged that the first victim, Sidney Monareng, was selling cigarettes when two African males confronted him and shot him in the head. Sidney’s friend, Mhlanganeni, whom he was talking to, was also shot and taken to Esangweni Clinic where he was certified dead on arrival,” said Masela.
According to Masela, the two convicts got life sentences for murder, eight years imprisonment for possession of an unlicenced firearm and four years imprisonment for illegal possession of live ammunition.
“Warrant Officer Maphoko Mphahlele of Rabie Ridge Police Station, who is taking an early pension this month, had a great farewell with this good conviction and this is one of his many successes in his police career.
“He has done a very good job when he investigated this case to make sure that the community improves its confidence in the police and perpetrators of such deeds must learn a good lesson from this good example,” Masela said.
Rabie Ridge Police Station commander Colonel Johana Ngoma said this is a good deterrent to stop murders around Rabie Ridge police precinct.
