One dead, three injured in N3 roll-over accident

The car rolled several times before stopping in the middle road island between the N3 south and north

A man, believed to be in his late 20s, was killed and a woman critically injured after the vehicle they were traveling in rolled at the N3 and N12 split in Germiston on Sunday morning at around 8am.

The woman was airlifted to Sunshine Hospital by the ER24 and OnePlan Medical helicopter, Annine Siddall of ER24 said.

Two more people sustained moderate injuries and they were transported to a nearby hospital for further medical care.

William Ntladi, spokesperson for Ekurhuleni Emergency Services, said the man who died was a passenger in the car. The male driver and two women were also injured.

According to him the car rolled several times before stopping in the middle road island between the N3 south and north at the Elands Interchange. “It is believed the vehicle was travelling at a very high speed south bound.”

A rescue team and paramedics from Germiston Central Fire Station responded to the scene. Specialised rescue tools had to be used to free all four patients from the wreckage.

“The injured were transported to various hospitals. Two of them were transported to Thelle Mogoerane Regional Hospital and one female patient was airlifted to Sunshine Hospital in Benoni,” Ntladi added.

The N3 north had to be temporarily closed for traffic to create a landing zone for the medical helicopter.
