Couple celebrates 63 years of marriage

They have been blessed with three children, seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and another great-grandchild on the way.

For some, 63 years is just an age to reach and celebrate but for Dennis (89) and Phillis (85) Herbst it is a wedding anniversary.

Dennis and Phillis were happy to celebrate their 63rd wedding anniversary on February 19.

“My grandparents met at a Christmas Eve party at a friend’s house. It must have been in December 1953,” said Jeanine Herbst.

“They got married in the Presbyterian Church in Primrose, Germiston and had the reception at Primrose Town Hall.

“Among other things, oupa loves ouma because she is caring, nurturing to all, her commitment to their marriage and being tolerant of his shortcomings. Ouma loves his kindness and gentleness.”

Their commitment to each other is what kept the couple’s marriage together over the decades.

“They took their wedding vows very seriously and have a strong commitment to each other to this day,” explained Jeanine.

“Oupa and ouma moved to Kempton Park in 1964 and have been blessed with three children, seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and another great-grandchild on the way.

“They have lived in Kempton Park for 53 years and have been such a blessing to everyone who has come into contact with them; they are truly loved by all.”
