The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ekurhuleni was shocked to hear in last week’s Council meeting that no action had been taken against the unregistered crèche whose negligence led to the death of a six-month-old baby on January 24.
Mosa Leago November’s parents were called to the crèche, only to find that the baby had tragically died while under the crèches care in Makhulong Section in Tembisa.
DA spokesperson for health and social development in Ekurhuleni Alderman Tania Campbell said the cause of death is pending the results of a post-mortem.
“Understandably, the baby’s parents are absolutely distraught and have had little explanation or sympathy from the crèche. After DA pressure in council, in an effort to avoid these kinds of incidents in crèches, the Department of Health and Social Development undertook a metro-wide audit on crèches to determine which were registered and which were not. In addition, the DA demanded that the tragic case of baby Leago be investigated by the metro,” added Campbell.
She explained after receiving replies to follow-up questions posed to the MMC for Community Services, Cllr Dora Mlambo, you can imagine their shock when asked about the status of the investigation into baby Leago’s death.
“The MMC replied that the incident took place outside of Ekurhuleni, and is therefore not the metro’s responsibility. This is quite simply untrue, as the incident took place in Ward Two in Makhulong in Tembisa, which is very much a part of Ekurhuleni. This is unacceptable, as the City of Ekurhuleni sits idly and tries to place the responsibility onto a neighbouring metro, while the parents of baby Leago continue to grieve and await justice,” said Campbell.
The DA in Ekurhuleni will stop at nothing to ensure that justice is done for the Leago family and will continue to pressure the metro to get to the bottom of this investigation and hold the crèche accountable for its negligence.
