Cab operators are soft targets for criminals

In all of the three cases the modus operandi of the robbers was the same

Ivory Park SAPS is concerned about an escalation in robberies targeting cab hailing service providers such as Uber and Taxify in the Ivory Park and Ebony Park areas.

According to the Ivory Park SAPS communications officer, Captain Bernard Matimulane, so far three cases of such robberies have been reported at the Ivory Park Police Station.

“In all of the three cases the modus operandi of the robbers was the same – a cab is hailed via the app by two or three suspects who are too “drunk” to drive. Once they are picked up, a random destination is mentioned. Not before long the poor drivers are pointed with a firearm, had their belongings robbed, was tied up and kidnapped as the robbers are locating the vehicle’s tracking device,” said Matimulane.

Matimulane added the Ivory Park SAPS is investigating the above incidents and are following possible leads.

The acting station commander of the Ivory Park SAPS, Colonel Baba Mpotoane, further calls on anyone with information to please come forward.

“Cab hailing service provides a safe form of transport for people, especially at night, so much so that we should not let few criminals spoil this good service. It is on that basis that we appeal for information to ensure that these robbers are brought to book before causing further damage,” said Mpotoane
