WATCH: Players join golf with a cause

All proceeds went to MES, but the day was more about raising awareness.

A crisp morning welcomed about 130 golfers onto the beautiful green course at Serengeti Golf and Wildlife Estate on May 11.

This charity golf day was organised by Kempton-based JJT Accountants in support of MES Kempton Park.

MES, which stands for Mould, Empower and Serve, is a community-based NGO that aims to empower people to live independent and sustainable lives. In short, they aim to change the heart of the city.

“Today, we’re changing the heart of the city on the golf course,” MES marketing manager Aloma Swanepoel told Express. “JJT Accountants set a good example of how the community can get involved in a fun way.”

According to her, the day was not just about raising funds but also to raise awareness about the work MES does. “Not only would we like to encourage businesses to get involved, but also individuals. Support us and make a difference in the city.”

For Gerhard Jacobs, practice manager of JJT Accountants, getting involved was a no-brainer.

“It’s about Kempton and the heart of this city. We’ve always supported MES but we wanted to do something more.”

Thus, the charity golf day. Players started at 10am in teams of four, battling it out at each hole for a shot at the winner’s title. Although a weekend away was on the line, it was clear; changing the city putt by putt was the message of the day.

Golf carts neatly lined up and at the ready to take players to the putting green.
