WATCH: President Ramaphosa launches Thuma Mina in Tembisa

President of the ruling party Cyril Ramaphosa did door-to-door visits to establish the problems faced by the community

African National Congress launched the #Thumamina campaign at the Makhulong Stadium in Tembisa on May 18.

The initiative is meant to mobilise volunteers to assist in speeding up government’s service delivery programmes.

President of the ruling party Cyril Ramaphosa did door-to-door visits to establish the problems faced by the community of Tembisa.

In front of scores of ANC supporters, the Ramaphosa said in this programme they don’t want lazy people because the programme’s objective is to clean towns and cities.

“We are going to make sure that this programme serves our people.

“We are saying where there are criminals the Thuma Mina campaign must work.

“Even to those who are criminals, we can’t be afraid. The Thuma Mina volunteers must get there and tackle them,” said Ramaphosa.

While the president was doing the door-to-door visits, 10 shacks caught fire not far from where he was.

ANC national spokesperson Pule Mabe issued a statement to the media condemning the Democratic Alliance (DA) for their haste to issue a media statement instead of rescuing the affected families.

“The ANC has noted with disgust the desperate attempt by the DA who of late seem to stoop as low as is necessary for a poor attempt to remain relevant.

“So deep is the level of desperation that the DA wants to mislead the nation using an unfortunate fire incident that happened earlier today in Tswelopele Extension Eight, Tembisa, where two stands caught fire, affecting 10 informal dwellings,” said Mabe.

Mabe said following the fire breakout, Ramaphosa immediately instructed the executive mayor of Ekurhuleni Mzwandile Masina to attend to the unfortunate incident and ensure the situation is stabilised, the safety of the families is secured and the necessary relief is dispersed.

“The leadership of the ANC in Ekurhuleni wasted no time in attending to the situation.

“Emergency services arrived with four fire engines to put out the fire.

“The city’s disaster management got busy with impact assessment while the Ekurhuleni human settlements department is busy with measures to ensure the families will have a roof over their head by the end of the day,” added Mabe.

“It is unfortunate the first point of action for the desperate DA was to issue a media statement instead of coming to the aid of the community. The DA, which is never on the ground, was in such a hurry to score empty moral points while deliberately misrepresenting facts to suit their narrow agenda.

“Today’s incident, unfortunate as it was, to the contrary, validates the ANC’s reasons to launch the Thuma Mina campaign to decisively intervene on issues affecting society.”
