Birchleigh North learner’s good maths bags him a trip to Malaysia
Help a Grade Seven maths genius get to Malaysia in December.
A local Grade Seven learner will be on his way to Malaysia to compete in a maths competition.Mogabudi Ledwaba (13) from Birchleigh North, under the guidance of the Universal Concept of Mental Arithmetic System (UCMAS), has been selected to compete at a maths competition in Kuala Lumpur in December.
Ledwaba has competed in various competitions under UCMAS and has reached the final stage in South Africa.
“Maths is my favourite subject and I have achieved 95 per cent for a term mark before and that made me realise that I needed to take my math ability further,” said Ledwaba. “When I grow up I want to be a neurologist,” he continued.
He attends school at Birch Acres Primary School and has won the district math Olympiad twice, in 2014 and 2016. His tutor, Lynette Visagie, has been tutoring him for a year now and says she sees a bright future for him.
“He is a very intelligent boy and he pushes himself to the best of his abilities,” she said.
In order for Ledwaba to get to Malaysia, he needs funding of about R10 000. “I know that if I go to Malaysia I will win this competition; I can feel it in my blood,” he said.
“We try to raise funds for him as much as possible. We have even opened a car wash in order for us to raise money for him to go to the competition,” said Visagie.
