Toy-making Norkem Park couple gets financial support from Shoprite
It is through play that children can best learn and form important concepts about themselves and their world
A Norkem Park husband and wife believe children need to identify with the toys they play with, the songs they sing and the books they read, as is the case with the assortment of toys, puzzles and books they have created – all with an educational element.
Thabo Motsabi from Norkem Park founded Toys with Roots along with his wife, Mpumi to celebrate African children.
He was one of 36 small business owners who received a cash injection and marketing support valued at over R70 000 as part of Shoprite’s Hustle competition. The competition was open to all small business owners with an annual turnover of less than R1-million.
Thabo and Mpumi dream of owning a toy store where they can sell and distribute to bigger wholesalers.
“It is through play that children can best learn and form important concepts about themselves and their world. It is so important for us to grow and reach more children – inspiring the youth of tomorrow has become our life,” said Thabo.
“We also have nursery rhymes and songs on Google Music and iTunes for people to download and teach their children and celebrate African children,” he continued.
With the boost received from Shoprite, they hope to expand their range of toys and set up a physical store.
