Tembisans learn about consumer rights

Ward 7 council empowers the community members on consumer rights and gave them channels to lodge their complaints.

On September 25, Ward 7 council trained community members on consumer rights and taught them on measures they can take in case of complaints.

Programme director Sibusiso Banda said National Consumer Commission’s Nokuphiwa Ngxola discouraged members of the community from resorting to any type of violence. Banda said to stop attacks on foreign shops and to avoid violence to continue.

“Ngxola encouraged the community to write petitions to the National Consumer Commission whenever there are complaints.

“Those grievances will be dealt with concerning non-compliant tuckshops. After receiving the petition the commission will launch an investigation on the matter. If they find any expired items in that particular store for which the petition has been written against, the expired items will be confiscated. After the confiscation of the expired goods, that shop will also be closed.

“Therefore, the community is encouraged to always check for the best before date,” Banda explained.

Banda said the types of consumer rights that were covered were the right to equality in the consumer market, right to privacy, right to choose, right to the disclosure of information, right to fair and honest dealings, right to fair value, good quality and safety.

He said to lodge a complaint consumers can email it to complains@thencc.org.za or walk in their offices at 1 Dr Lategan Road, Groenkloof, Pretoria.
