Contractor causes fire in roof at Festival Mall
Staff members who inhaled smoke were transported to hospital.
Faulty cable torching caused a fire on the roof of Checkers Hyper at Festival Mall on Wednesday.
According to Lee-Anne Leathley, Festival Mall’s marketing manager, the fire broke out at around 12.30pm. Apparently it was accidentally caused by one of the mall’s roofing contractors.
“The contractor was torching the wires on the sides of Checkers Hyper and House & Home’s cooling tower when he accidentally caused the fire,” said Leathley. “Although the fire was put out immediately, some smoke still entered the store.”
Staff members and customers in the store were immediately asked to evacuate when the smoke entered the store.
“No one was harmed, but the staff members who inhaled the smoke were taken to hospital and their health is being closely monitored. The safety of our tenants and customers remain our top priority,” she concluded.
