Buy your own piece of astro field at Kempies

The KYD committee is looking for sponsors and people to invest in the field by buying parts of the field.

A new water-based hockey field, also known as an astro, will be built by Kempton Youth Development (KYD) at Hoërskool Kempton Park by next year.KYD is a non-profit organisation which aims to develop the youth of Kempton Park, and it starts off with hockey.

KYD has set up a project to build an artificial water-based hockey field which will grow hockey by providing access to coaching and facilities to develop hockey players and build the required skills and techniques from a young age.

Caroline Gildenhuys, who is the committee chairperson for KYD, said they wanted to involve primary and high schools in Kempton Park and surrounding areas to benefit from the project.

Hoërskool Kempton Park has offered one of its hockey fields on the school’s premises to KYD to develop the new astro turf.

“We currently travel to a high school in Benoni once a week for an hour’s practice on an astro turf, then return to grass fields. That is the only practice we get and that is not enough,” said Gildenhuys.

“Primary schools don’t have that kind of luxury, so when they get to high school they lack those skills and we are trying to help them gain those skills.”

Although the astro turf is not yet complete, KYD, in cooperation with Hoërskool Kempton Park, has already started hockey clinics for the main beneficiaries like Laerskool Kreft Primary, which includes coaching and focusing on technical skills.

The KYD committee is looking for sponsors and people to invest in the field by buying parts of the field.

They will host an auction at Hoërskool Kempton Park on November 28. RSVP by November 14 if you would like to attend the auction. RSVP by visiting www.quicket.co.za and then search for astro auction.
