Only New Year’s baby at Arwyp arrives five weeks early
The loving parents haven’t been able to hold Dehandré yet, as he is recovering from a lung infection in the intensive care unit.
While Kemptonians celebrated New Year’s Day, first-time parents Hugo (29) and Deidré (26) Coetzee from Norkem Park welcomed their little boy into the world.
Dehandré McLaren Coetzee, who has his mom’s lips and his dad’s dimples, was the only baby born at Arwyp Medical Centre on January 1. He weighed 2.36kg, measured 47cm and made his entrance promptly at 5.48pm.
Baby Dehandré must’ve been very excited to meet his parents because he was born five weeks early.
“On December 28, I had cramps and went to the emergency room,” Deidré told Express outside the maternity ward on the fourth floor.
Doctors confirmed that a high infection count in her blood was spreading to her womb and that it was time for Dehandré to arrive early via caesarean section.

“He’s perfect,” dad Hugo said when he saw his son for the first time. When Deidré heard Dehandré’s cries for the first time, she cried too. “It’s the biggest gift that you can start the year with.”
The loving parents haven’t been able to hold Dehandré yet, as he is recovering from a lung infection in the intensive care unit. They look forward to the day they can take him home and when his two grandmothers, two grandfathers, two great-grandmothers and one great-grandfather can finally meet him too.
One of the little boy’s first gifts will probably be a rugby ball, as both parents are avid fans. “Obviously we won’t mind if he’s the next Eben Etzebeth, ”Deidré teased, “but we also hope he becomes the man that God wants him to be.”
Deidré’s tip for new moms is to listen to the advice other people give you. Hugo’s advice to dads is to walk the path with God. Be the man that you need to be for your home.
