EMPD nails 437 drunk drivers as 47 die on Ekurhuleni roads

EMPD speed cameras captured 108 071 vehicles for driving over the speed limit.

More than 430 drunk drivers had been arrested by the metro police in the City of Ekurhuleni from December 1 until January 5.

The 437 drivers who ended up behind bars were among the 987 people nabbed by the metro police during this period.

“The EMPD embarked on intensive crime prevention, traffic law enforcement as well as by-law enforcement operations at pre-identified hot spots in the whole of the City of Ekurhuleni,” said Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, spokesperson for the metro police.

406 people were arrested for miscellaneous crimes, 437 for drinking and driving, 40 for possession and dealing in narcotics, 108 for speeding and 186 pedestrians for being on the freeways.

Forty-seven road users died on freeways during the period, which included 13 drivers, three motorcyclists, 17 passengers, one cyclist and 14 pedestrians. Thirteen vehicles were in single motor vehicle accidents, three in head-on collisions and three pedestrians were run over on freeways, Kgasago said.

More than 70 per cent of the fatal collisions occurred between 10pm and 5am. No fatal accidents had been recorded since since January 2.

Kgasago said 13 972 pedestrians were stopped and searched. Over 25 000 spot summonses were issued and 33 stolen or hijacked vehicles were recovered, as well as three unlicensed firearms.

Narcotics in the form of crystal methamphetamine, Cat, mandrax, dagga, ecstasy, nyaope and dagga valued at R982 000 were seized from 40 suspects.

Since Friday, the metro police beefed up numbers on the N3, R21, N12 and R59 freeways to monitor and ensure the safety of road users.

In Kempton Park, seven people died in accidents, which included two drivers, three passengers and two pedestrians.

Eighty drivers were apprehended for drinking and driving.

Three drug-dealers found in possession of Cat, crystal methamphetamine, mandrax and dagga with a street value of R22 000 were arrested.

There were no fatalities recorded in Tembisa.

Thirty-nine drivers were locked up for drinking and driving with 11 being from Rabie Ridge.
