WATCH: Happy ending for Birchleigh kitten stuck underneath car
The owner of the car couldn’t find where the kitten’s calls were coming from until she was already driving.
A kitten stuck on top of a car’s wheel was rescued on Buffelsgras Street in Birchleigh on Wednesday morning after two good Samaritans lent a helping hand.
According to resident Elize Kluyts, she heard a cat calling the night before but couldn’t trace where the sound was coming from.
“It was only this morning [Wednesday], as I was driving to work, that I heard the cat was inside my car,” she told Express in her driveway. Cries could be heard from the kitten, which was still stuck.
“I usually listen to music in my car, and this morning I didn’t. Imagine if I had, I never would’ve heard the kitten.”
Kluyts called the SPCA about the situation, but they were unable to tend to the scene at the time because they did not have a vehicle available.
When Express became aware of the situation, David Jooste, owner of On The Road Again, was contacted to help. Jooste, along with foreman Raymond Mahlaola, arrived promptly to lend a hand.
The two men lifted the car with a jack, removed the left front wheel and safely removed the black and white kitten.
A tearful Kluyts placed the scared kitten in a basket and gave it water to drink.
Jooste decided to keep the kitten, which he aptly named MacGyver.
“I don’t know how the kitten got into the car, so it must be a MacGyver,” he said.
If no-one claims the kitten by Saturday (January 19), Jooste will keep MacGyver.
