Fleeing R21 driver cornered by metro police in Clayville

The driver pretended to slow down before he took the off-ramp at high speed

Members of the Swat team of Ekurhuleni Metro Police fired several shots at the car of a fleeing motorist suspected of drunken driving at the weekend.The 36-year-old man was finally arrested in Tembisa after first being spotted on the R21 north late Saturday evening.

According to acting spokesperson for the metro police, Kobeli Mokheseng, the manwas charged with failing to stop when instructed to do so by an officer, as well as reckless and negligent driving at OlifantsfonteinPolice Station.

A blood sample was also taken.

Mokheseng said officers had to use force in order to corner the flying red VW Golf 6, at the driver seemed to be intoxicated. The first attempt to stop the GTI was on the R21 north at the Olifantsfontein turn-off.

The driver pretended to slow down before he took the off-ramp at high speed, disregarding red traffic lights and carelessly driving through stop signs.

The car was boxed in, in Clayville Extension 26 on Zirconium Road after backup was called. The car’s tyres were shot out.
