Malawian plane did not crash-land at OR Tambo Airport

Precautionary procedures were implemented to tow the aircraft to the parking bay.

A Malawian Airlines plane, which also carried Malawi’s vice-president Saulos Chilima, did not crash-land at OR Tambo International Airport on January 14.

According to Malawi Airlines’ Rashid Seedat, one of the aircraft’s tyres deflated upon landing.

“The flight had a normal landing at OR Tambo. However, upon touchdown, the captain of the flight realised one of the plane’s tyres deflated during normal braking,” said Seedat.

“As a precaution, the captain decided not to proceed with taxing to the terminal parking bay, but opted to have passengers disembark on the runway. All passengers disembarked with no incident.”

Seedat also dismissed reports circulating, alleging the plane’s landing gear did not release and it landed on its belly.

“We are also aware of information making rounds on social media and other online media outlets alleging our flight crash-landed due to problems with the aircraft’s landing gear, but that is not true. We are investigating the incident to establish the cause of the tyre deflation,” explained Seedat.

Precautionary procedures were implemented to tow the aircraft to the parking bay, the deflated tyre was replaced and the return flight operated albeit with a two-hour delay.
