Striking workers damage colleagues’ homes in Kaalfontein
Ivory Park SAPS urges the community to assist the police in keeping a watchful eye on this group

A group of striking workers burned furniture at two Kaalfontein houses, belonging to non-striking workers, on Wednesday.
The station commander of Ivory Park SAPS, Brig David Mbongeni Ngcobo, strongly condemned these acts of malicious damage to property and intimidation.
These criminal acts are alleged to have been committed by some striking workers working for a Midrand-based pharmaceutical group and aimed at their non-striking colleagues.
Ngcobo said a group of between 50 and 100 people, who upon their arrival at these addresses, threatened the occupants with violence and then broke open the rooms and burned furniture, the value of which is not known at this stage.
He urged the community to assist the police in keeping a watchful eye on this group and alert the police immediately in order to avoid any further damage to property and possible injuries.
“These acts are clearly unlawful and the perpetrators were aware of this, hence the reason they threatened anyone in possession of a cellphone, knowing fully well that their unlawful activities will be known and seen by the public.
“This should be condemned by all law-abiding residents and, we accordingly, appeal to the community to be our ears and eyes and to alert us should they be seen roaming the area, as we are not sure how many of their colleagues are based in this area,” said Ngcobo.
The victims in both cases have been advised to open cases.
