A learner who matriculated at Norkem Park High School last year received Ekurhuleni’s third best student award from mayor Mzwandile Masina on January 24.
Rowan Kuppasamy (18) achieved seven distinctions. He was first in his grade for the class of 2018.

Kuppasamy got distinctions in English (87%), Afrikaans (89%), mathematics (96%), life orientation (94%), accounting (94%), business studies (96%) and physical science (99%). The Norkem Park learner was also awarded the best business studies learner in Ekurhuleni at the awards ceremony at Alberton Civic Centre.
“I am honoured and humbled to be the first to come out with such results at Norkem High in a long time. I have been an A learner since I was in Grade One, and studying is just a habit and hobby for me. That was how I managed to achieve top results,” said Kuppasamy.
“My parents have been a big part of why I have been achieving so much. They always encourage me to work hard and now I see why.”
He said he tried to spend some time at his books every day to go through his work, making notes, revising and practising, leading up to the exams.
Kuppasamy was also head boy of the school last year.
“I enjoyed every moment I spent at Norkem High. Although there are some glitches here and there at the school, there are quite a lot of positives and you just need to see them,” he said. “I think it’s good that those positives are being shown through me. There are good teachers and good learners and often that is not portrayed or presented.”
Kuppasamy’s favourite subject is mathematics. He is studying actuarial science at the University of the Witwatersrand.
“My favourite teacher at Norkem High was Mr Moloi, who taught me physical science. He was always hands-on and assisted me with everything I needed. He always made time for me and saw potential in me, and I thank him for that,” said Kuppasamy.
“My advice for this year’s matriculants is that they work hard, make a lot of sacrifices and in the end, it will be worth it.”
The former Jeugpark Primary School learner will also be attending the Ekurhuleni North Sub-District Awards Ceremony on February 7 at Kempton Park Civic Centre.
