Domestic worker wounded in robbery in which officer was killed

The mother-of-three, who also takes care of her three nieces, worries how she will take care of them now that she cannot work.

New information has surfaced that fallen police officer Rudzani Khalushi (36) was not the only victim of an armed robbery at Jet on West Street on February 1.

Ivory Park resident Thando Masuku (33) was opposite Akhona Furnishers on Pretoria Road when she heard a gunshot and saw people running towards her.

She ran into a store for safety but was wounded in her left knee and fell to the ground.

“I felt pain and started bleeding. I was very scared, I thought I was going to die,” she told Express.

The mother-of-three, who also takes care of her three nieces, was taken to Tembisa Hospital, where doctors confirmed a stray bullet went through her leg.

With her whole leg in plaster, she is unable to work. She was discharged on Thursday, six days after the incident.

“I’m still in a lot of pain and I struggle to walk,” Masuku said, who is now on crutches. She is a domestic worker and is unable to work because of her injury.

“My husband does painting jobs but he’s not employed full-time,” she added. She worries about how she will take care of the six children in her care.

According to Masuku a police officer in civilian clothes visited her in hospital and said someone would return to take her statement. “No one has spoken to me since,” she said.

According to Capt Jethro Mtshali, spokesperson for Kempton Park SAPS, the matter is currently being handled by the task team.” He could not comment further.

The four robbery suspects appeared in Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of armed robbery, possession of unlicensed firearms and murder.

They are Siphamandla Gcabashe (24), Goodman Gobinga (32), Andile Sandile Mthembu (21) and Khangelani Ngcongo (32).

Their bail application has been postponed to February 11.
