UPDATE: Eskom ups load shedding to stage 4

Eskom said since this morning it unexpectedly lost six additional generating units which put additional strain on the system

Eskom on Monday afternoon announced it had to increase stage 2 load shedding to stage 4 from 1pm.

This means double the amount of power must be shed compared to stage 2.

Eskom said since this morning it unexpectedly lost six additional generating units which put additional strain on the system.

Stage 1 requires 1000MW, Stage 2 requires 2000MW, Stage 3 requires 3000MW and Stage 4 calls for 4000MW to be rotationally loadshed nationally at a given period. Load shedding is conducted rotationally as a measure of last resort to protect the power system.

Eskom takes control of the City of Ekurhuleni’s load shedding schedules from stage 3.

Eskom appeals to residents and businesses to use electricity sparingly during this period. Switch off geysers as well as all non-essential lighting and electricity appliances to assist in reducing demand.

Eskom will again implement stage 2 load shedding on Monday, starting at 9am.

It is likely to last until 10pm tonight.

According to Eskom a number of generating units have returned to service according to a nine-point plan. However, additional units continue to trip.

This results in a shortage of generating power.
