The arrested pedestrians were all locked up at Olifantsfontein Police Station
The EMPD Freeway Unit on Tuesday and Wednesday last week conducted special operations on the R21 north near the Engen 1-Stop, targeting hitch-hikers and motorists picking up employees on the freeway where they are prohibited to do so.
The operations were conducted between 6am and 8.30am, said Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, spokesperson for the metro police.
On Tuesday 23 pedestrians were arrested and nine motorists issued with fines.
Wednesday’s operation yielded 18 pedestrians with three motorists slapped with R500 fines each.
The arrested pedestrians were all locked up at Olifantsfontein Police Station but later released after being issued with a fine of R300 each.
