Snakes are alive in Modderfontein

Expert herpetologist Mike Adams will present an illustrated talk on the snakes of Modderfontein.

Expert herpetologist Mike Adams will present an illustrated talk on the snakes of Modderfontein at the Modderfontein Conservation Society meeting on February 21 at 7.30pm.

His talk will include information on snakebites and treatments thereof.

The meeting takes place in the small hall at the Old Modderfontein Town Hall, 1 Casino Road.

Adams is an environmental scientist with a specialisation in herpetology. He completed a BSc (environmental science) at the University of Cape Town, followed by an honours degree in wildlife management at the University of Pretoria.

He spent six years working with reptiles and amphibians, firstly as curator of reptiles at a private reptile facility and then at the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa.

He is eminently qualified to talk on the snakes of Modderfontein, having worked for a period with the Endangered Wildlife Trust at the organisation’s headquarters in the village. He is a highly accomplished and entertaining speaker.

With the developments that have taken place in and around Modderfontein over the past 10 to 15 years, much of the grassland and veld have disappeared. This resulted in numerous snakes migrating due to being deprived of their natural habitat.

However, there are still some to be found in the Modderfontein Reserve, although seldom seen.

Visitors are welcome to attend the talk. An entrance fee of R30 is charged to help cover expenses.
