Woman gives birth in fire engine in Edenvale

The incident happened at the corner of Van Riebeeck and 7th streets

A healthy baby boy was born in an Ekurhuleni fire engine in Edenvale on February 5.

At around 4.30pm, firefighters from Edenvale Fire Station were on their way back from a vehicle on fire call when they were alerted to a maternity patient in her mid-twenties who was in active labour on the side of the road, said William Ntladi, spokesperson for the emergency services.

The firefighters immediately stopped. The patient was loaded into the fire truck which then raced to the fire station where she could receive medical attention.

Just before the vehicle could stop, while still at the main entrance of the fire station, a healthy baby boy was born inside the fire engine.

Patient medical care for both mother and baby was rendered prior to transportation by ambulance to Edenvale Hospital for further medical care.
