Muddy deliveries can’t be helped, says sand company on Pretoria Road

'It is the nature of our products,' an employee of the company said.

Despite community complaints of messy deliveries, sand and stone suppliers JJ Maritz and Son say they are fully compliant to road, health and safety legislation.

According to Clr Gideon van Zyl, he has received around 20 complaints about the business, located on Old Pretoria Road, over the past two years.

“Often, sand and mud fall from their trucks, which creates a dangerous situation on the roads,” Van Zyl told Express.

Ward committee member for infrastructure Amanda Davidson said this issue is seen across Kempton Park. “Once the watery sand is dry we must play slip and slide up and down Pretoria Road, High Road, Elgin Road and everywhere else.”

Adele Fourie, mine manager for JJ Maritz and Son, told Express the issue of wet sand could not be helped.

“The nature of the company’s product is such that it cannot be transported in a drier state,” she said.

Fourie added the company’s product, vehicles and operations are fully compliant to the necessary legislation.

Fourie did not comment further, stating the company welcomed any complaints or comments from the public, but did not publicly engaged in such matters.

“I understand they are trying to do their jobs, but then they must address these problems,” Van Zyl added.
