Terenure’s two-week-old trash removed by residents
'If we don’t do it, who will?' one resident said.
The working day had barely begun at the Express office in Monument Road on Monday morning when we received a call from Terenure resident Daleen Coetzee (70).
“What I am about to tell you is extremely important,” she said seriously. Pen at the ready, we took note of her story:
“The municipality has failed to empty our wheelie bins in Terenure since February 7. That’s two weeks and four days; maggots started crawling in the trash.
“Then, on Sunday afternoon (February 24), members of the community came with their cars and bakkies to remove the trash.
“I couldn’t believe it when I saw it, they didn’t even complain. ‘If we don’t do it, who will?’ one man said when I thanked him. Those people are going to have to disinfect their cars now. I don’t know who these people were, but thank you for what you have done.”
According to Clr Tracey Lourenco, the refuse removal was an initiative by Alleycats patrollers.
“They took hands with the community to remove as much refuse as possible,” she told Express.
