Tembisa’s Tyson guards new reservoir in Kempton

“These days there are no jobs, you must do any job well," the father of three says.

On the edge of Dann Road, right before the off-ramp to the M32, stands a metre-high reservoir, with a roof made of 140 tons of steel. At its entrance, construction workers are adding the finishing touches to a soon-to-be guardhouse. The structure almost seems minute in the shadow of the reservoir, which will carry up to 25 million litres of water.

The proud inhabitant of the guard house will be Dream Team Security guard Tyson Mtshali (32). He is one of the two security members who take shifts to guard the reservoir for 24 hours.

“I love my job,” he tells Express in the sweltering heat, while construction to the little house continues. “These days there are no jobs, you must do any job well.”

The reservoir’s keeper. Security guard Tyson Mtshali (32) from Tembisa says he doesn’t get scared guarding this concrete creation. “God protects me.”

Back home, in Winnie Mandela informal settlement in Tembisa, he has wife Nqobile (27) and their three children who count on him.

Tyson was born in Tembisa Hospital and says he always dreamed of working for a big company when he was a little boy.

“Now, this is my dream job,” he laughs. “I would advise people to always work nicely and to follow instructions.”The avid Chelsea and Mamelodi Sundowns supporter enjoys watching soccer in his free time, which isn’t a lot as he works Mondays to Saturdays. “On Sundays, I like listening to gospel music,” he explains. “I believe in God. That is why I never get scared while on this job. He protects me. He protects everything.”
