Moriting residents celebrate their street’s name

21 March Street residents celebrate Human Rights Day with Skeem Saam actresses.

The Moriting community organised a social gathering to celebrate their street name, 21 March Street, on Human Rights Day.

Life4U Foundation, Legal Aid South Africa and ShopriteMobile Soup Kitchen, were some of the organisations that attended the event.

The community was treated to free legal advic, and the children to music, dance and food. The entertainment got spiced up by the juicy performances of Skeem Saam’s actresses, Mogau ‘Mapitsi’ Motlatswi and Jenny‘Sihle’ Sicwebu, well-known TV personalities.

Laurence Moabelo, a community member, said the event was held to commemorate the Sharpeville massacre. On this day, 59 years ago, on March 21, 1960, 69 Sharpeville residents were shot dead by the apartheid police as they embarked on anti-pass laws protests which were spearheaded by the leader of the Pan Africanist Congress, the late Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe.

“It all started when we collected money to make our own braai on this day. One of the guys said we have to buy a sheep, and I agreed, noting that we could as well celebrate the day [since it was named after the events of March 21, 1960].

“We are trying to educate and remind our young people that it is not just about our street, but about the events of March 21, 1960,” said Maobelo.

Project manager of Life 4U Foundation Simon Molekwa said the event was a success, adding that TV personalities from Skeem Saam added a spark to it.

“People have enjoyed this event and we have made sure that they get legal advice, and they now know their rights,” said Molekwa.
