Security guard (34) needs urgent eye surgery to save his sight

He needs to raise about R61 000 within 30 days.

A 34-year-old security guard from Norkem Park could permanently lose the sight in his left eye if he doesn’t raise about R61 000 within 30 days for an urgent eye operation.

Hannes Volschenk, an Alpha Security employee, was diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism in February last year. Usually, this is caused by blood clots that travel to the lungs from the legs.

“I couldn’t breathe and was taken to Tembisa Hospital,” Volschenk, who doesn’t have medical aid, explained. After six months of treatment and regular blood tests, he was finally on the mend.

In February this year, however, he realised the sight in his left eye was weakening by the day.

“I was referred to a specialist by a local optometrist, who then referred me to a surgeon ophthalmologist,” Volschenk said. There he was diagnosed with retinal traction, which happens when tissue grows on the retina and pulls it away from the layer underneath.

Doctors say it is crucial that Volschenk undergoes surgery as soon as possible. If he doesn’t have the surgery by April 26, he could permanently lose the sight in his left eye, as the current damage could be irreversible at that stage.

Although Volschenk has since joined a medical aid, he said they could not cover his procedure because he was a new member.

Express is in possession of notes from Volschenk’s various doctors explaining his health situation, as well as a quotation from an eye surgeon, who estimated the cost of his procedure.
