For the past two years, the DA in Ekurhuleni has pleaded to have Jet Park Road rebuilt.
It is a cry that has been ignored, as the City of Ekurhuleni claims it has no money, said Ward Clr Simon Lapping.
Jet Park Road is one of the main feeder roads from Kempton Park to Boksburg. It services a large portion of Jet Park and Isando and Elandsfontein Railway Station. During heavy rains, train commuters are expected to trudge through the mud, as there are no sidewalks.”
Lapping said the roads department continually placed the blame on Rand Water. Rand Water, however, is only working on a portion of the road.
“The DA has constantly challenged the appointment of contractors to work on this portion of the road. A number of questionable contractors have attempted to do patch jobs, but these repairs generally last a few weeks before disintegrating.”
Businesses in the Jet Park area sent a memorandum regarding the state of the road to the executive mayor, Clr Mzwandile Masina, over a year ago. This memorandum was simply ignored, according to Lapping.
“Out of desperation, my wife Anneli and I took to the street to try to highlight the issue that the municipality is bankrupt and needs any small change to help rebuild the road.
“The DA find it appalling that Ekurhuleni campaigns as a hub for businesses and are open for business, but then they get ignored when they ask for a basic services.
“It is this lacklustre attitude toward businesses that is preventing the economy from growing.”
The metro did not respond to queries sent by Kempton Express.
However, on Thursday last week Lapping got a message from the roads department in Edenvale, saying: “We are still waiting for the reallocation of money, no money, no material.”
