Tembisa new business sites in Maphanga Street to house business stalls for the entrepreneurs.

Kempton Park Tembisa Tourism Association (KTTA) launched Makhi Market at Maphanga Street in Mangweni Section on April 7.

The street is a marketing hub which allows people to set up stalls to market their products, including arts and crafts.

The Makhi Market centre is also home to dance and entertainment groups to perform.

At the launch, Amafikivronko dance and gumboots group were invited to perform.

Locals are urged to create their own brands, to show creativity and to promote and market their products.

Fika Ledwaba is the founder and project director of KTTA and Makhi Market. He said their vision was to give the young and the old an opportunity to market their products.

“Our goal is to encourage young people to trade,” said Ledwaba.

Co-founder of the project Sibusiso Nhlabathi said they were looking forward to transforming Maphanga Street into a tourist attraction street, creating their own version of Vilakazi Street of Tembisa. Vilakazi Street is Soweto’s famous tourist attraction business complex, earning its fame because it was a street in which former Nelson Mandela’s home was situated before his incarceration on Robben Island.

“We celebrate different cultures and we want to be recognised and expose different crafts of art, making the street an entrepreneurial destination,” said Nhlabathi.
