NPO helps to keep Kempton CBD green and clean
The CBD is known for many things, but cleanliness is not one of them.
Commuters were met with a sight of a different sort in Kempton Park’s central business district (CBD) on Friday morning when community members started cleaning the streets.
The CBD is known for many things but cleanliness is not one of them. This is something the Green Development Foundation (GDF), a local non-profit organisation on Long Street, hopes to change.
“We’re trying to make this corner of Kempton Park the most beautiful in the city,” said Amo Mokoape, CEO of GDF.
Mokoape, her colleagues and stakeholders took hands with roughly 300 volunteers to pick up litter on Central Avenue, West Street and Monument Road, in a national clean-up campaign called #GoodGreenDeeds.

The rubbish would later be separated for recycling by the organisation’s enviroguards, who usually assist the municipality with waste picking.
“When we ask people why they’re littering, they say they are creating jobs,” Mokoape explained. She believes municipal resources should rather be used for things like parks.
“It hurts me so much when I see waste management is not being implemented.”
Mokoape hopes the project will expand to the rest of the city and inspire residents to refrain from littering.
“We are willing to fight for this cause until we are no longer able to do so.”
