Forceful eviction by Red Ants leaves people stranded

Scores of families left stranded following a forceful eviction.

On May 2 the Red Ants burned down shacks in Austin View between Rabie Ridge and Mayibuye Section.

One of the community leaders, Oscar Mkhari, said the community made an urgent application in the South African High Court in Pretoria.

He said on May 3 they were going to court with land owner and he hopes the Red Ants security company were notified about the court appearance so that they can stop evicting the community.

“We are not fighting with stones but we are using the law to challenge the person who keeps sending Red Ants to destroy the shacks.

“If the judge disputes the matter we will do another application until they let us stay here even temporarily until we get a proper place,” said Mkhari.

Given Kgapola said “I am very hurt by this burning of our homes. I am shocked to see such a thing, I was called from work and neighbors alerted me that our shacks were torched and our belongings were getting destroyed in the fire. I rushed back and found that my shack was burned to ashes. We will meet with the community and rebuild our homes but we do not know what is going to happen next. As we speak this open space has been here for many years and no one knows the rightful owner of this land.
