Police, looking for suspects, fired stun grenades to calm down Glen Marikana residents on Friday.
According to Capt Jethro Mtshali, spokesperson for Kempton Park SAPS, a commotion started when police went to the informal settlement in an attempt to make arrests.
“Police were previously conducting normal operations in the settlement when some of the residents damaged two police vehicles and three private security vehicles who were working with police,” said Mtshali.

“Police returned on Friday to trace wanted suspects for several assault cases, but again police were hurled with stones and stun grenades were fired by police to disperse the crowd.”
Ward Clr Jaco Terblanche questioned the police’s intentions at the settlement.
“Was it necessary for police to shoot at residents? Residents at Glen Marikana are also human beings and should be treated as such. The community is now scared of police and I will raise their concerns with Kempton Park SAPS,” said Terblanche.
Reports of a child being hit by a stray bullet during the commotion are untrue. According to Mthsali and Terblanche, there were no injuries reported.
