A learner from Sonrise Christian School was among a chosen few to visit the International Student Convention (ISC) in the United States.
The convention was hosted under the auspices of Accelerated Christian Education (ACE) and gave fellow Christian students from countries across the world the chance to come together.
On returning to South Africa, Sonrise Grade 10 learner Tumelo Matseding said he had to put his emotions and memories on hold for now.
“I have arrived back in the middle of the half-year Independent Education Board exams which, by necessity, require my fully focused attention. When the exams are over and done with there will be plenty of time to regale everyone with the reminiscences of my trip.”
He did express his heartfelt appreciation to Accelerated Education Enterprises (AEE), Sonrise Christian School and his parents for being afforded the once-in-a-lifetime experience of an international gathering of such significance and to witness the New York lifestyle and the fantasy of Disneyland first hand.
Each year, under the auspices of AEE, student delegates from Christian schools as far afield as Nigeria, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and Mauritius and neighbouring states join their South African counterparts at the University of the Free State to participate in the week-long All Africa Student Convention (AASC).
The delegates take part in fellowship rallies and test themselves against one another in a variety of competitive events that include athletics, sports, general knowledge, biblical knowledge contests and chess.
Talented students give performances in the artistic fields of music, dancing and drama. Others display their skills through paintings, photography, woodwork, model building and various specialised projects.
Lifelong friendships are forged at these conventions at the end of which the highest achieving students are nominated to attend the ISC that is held annually in the USA under the auspices of ACE.
Tumelo was the recipient of such a nomination in the category still life photography to the 2019 ISC, despite Sonrise being one of the smallest schools attending the AASC.
