Rhodesfield debaters bring the cup home

Several debaters made it to the top 10 speakers.

The senior debating team of Rhodesfield Technical High School brought home the Super Cup for 2019 after beating Sacred Heart College in the final.

The junior team, which faced Parktown High School for Girls in the final of the same competition, came second, bringing home silver medals.

The school’s road to fame started when they reached the finals of the Gauteng Debating League (GDL) in October.

Both the junior and senior teams went on to face Freedom Community College and Basa Tutorial Institute respectively in the grand finale at Constitutional Hill on November 3.

Both teams won the finals, becoming the 2019 Gauteng Debating League Champions, winning the trophy and each a medal and certificate.

But it did not end there. Two teams went up against the champions of the SACEE Debating League 2019 in the Gauteng Super Cup on the same day, where the senior team won the cup and the juniors were runners-up.

Nomsa Mboneli was the best senior debater in the Super Cup final, Nosipho Sokhela the best speaker in the GDL senior final and Ntando Shamase the best junior debater during the GDL final.

The following debaters received gold medals and certificates for ranking in the top 10 best speakers throughout the whole tournament:

Senior division: Nomsa Mboneli (first), Nosipho Sokhela (fourth), Phenyo Mphela (fifth) and Lesego Negoasheng (fifth).

Junior division: Anna Mtawarira (seventh) and Khalipha Moni (ninth).
