Despite the acquisition of 23 additional waste removal trucks by the City of Ekurhuleni last year, a waste backlog continued, and another plan had to be made.
According to ward councillor Amanda Davison, who is also a member of the environment and waste management oversight committee, an “as and when” contract had been signed with a supplier who would lease trucks to the waste department in the event of breakdowns.
In September last year, the metro announced it had bought an additional 23 waste removal trucks which were delivered in November. This, however, did not solve the problem completely.
On Monday, Davison said the environmental oversight meeting held last Thursday, which was attended by the MMC and HOD, unveiled the latest plan to avoid continual waste removal backlog.
“The service level agreement is being finalised and the HOD assured the committee that by the end of January, the refuse collection backlogs would be a thing of the past,” she said.
“The DA is in contact with the Kempton waste depot manager who will ensure regular clean-up of the facility. We will closely monitor the cleanliness situation at the depot with regular follow-up visits.
“In order to prevent feral cat fatalities, DA councillors will have a meeting with the depot manager to discuss the rodent control measures being used, as we are of the opinion that feral cats died after apparently ingesting poisoned rats.”
