Glen Marikana residents will be gone by the end of March

Terblanche also said the shack materials will be taken to the new location using trucks

After years of uncertainty, there seems to be light at the end of the Glen Marikana relocation tunnel.

The residents of Glen Marikana informal settlement on Dann Road in Glen Marais will be relocated to the new land in Putfontein by March 31.

This is based on the outcomes of a meeting attended by the speaker of Ekurhuleni Patricia Khumalo, MMC of human settlements Lesiba Mpya, caucus leader of the DA Phillip de Lange, MMC of infrastructure services Masele Madihlaba, the leadership of Glen Marikana and ward councillor Jaco Terblanche.

The meeting was held at the speaker’s office in Germiston on Tuesday morning and Terblanche said the relocation is expected to start on February 24.

“There will be a meeting on February 9 at the settlement where the residents will be informed of the new developments,” said Terblanche.

“The following day (February 10) the verification process will start to ensure that everyone living in Glen Marikana gets relocated to the new land properly. Two contractors have been appointed for the relocation. People will be transported in buses and the shacks will be dismantled and erected in Putfontein.”

Terblanche also said the shack materials will be taken to the new location using trucks.

“I will ensure that the residents are kept safe during this process by asking the police and metro police to be on high alert and present throughout,” said Terblanche.

The purchase of the Putfontein land was approved at the council meeting last week Thursday.
