Proposed new municipal demarcations in the northern region of The City of Ekurhuleni were announced at Rabasotho Community Hall in Thembisa on March 2.
The meeting was led by Ndosi Shongwe, MMC for Ekurhuleni City Planning.
On March 16, the Municipal Demarcation Board (MDB) will engage with the community of the northern region at Alberton Civic Centre at 9am. Buses will be provided for those who want to attend.
The delimitation of wards is in preparation for the 2021 local government elections.
Shongwe urged municipalities to communicate these changes to members of the public and encourage participation in the ward delimitation process.
Three milestones have been identified for 2020 which follows immediately after the preparation of draft wards.
Firstly, public consultations are undertaken between February and April.
Proposals should be aligned to the criteria for ward delimitation and can be submitted by not later than April 30 to registry@demarcation.org.za.
After the public meetings, the MDB will consider all public proposals received and delimit wards,” said Shongwe.
“Secondly, the MDB must complete and finalise the legal process for the delimitation of municipal wards in May. All municipal and metropolitan ward boundaries will be published in the relevant gazettes. The wards will be published in provincial gazettes for objections by May this year.
“Any aggrieved person will have 14 days to object.
“Lastly, the ward delimitation process will be concluded by handing over the final ward boundaries to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) by August 2020,” added the MMC.
In the northern region, which includes, among others, Kempton Park and Thembisa, nine wards were declared non-compliant. These wards include ward one, four, six, nine, 10, 25, 100, 102 and 110.
