Overturned tanker transporting paraffin causes obstruction on R21

The truck was transporting 10 000 litres of paraffin.

A white Mercedes Benz Actros articulated motor vehicle (truck) from Kwazulu-Natal travelling to Tshwane transporting 10 000 liters of paraffin overturned at about 12.30pm in Kempton Park today.

Four people sustained minor injuiries and three other vehicles were involved in the collission on the Albertina Sisulu (R21) freeway, direction north at the Atlas on-ramp.

The flow of traffic was affected for about four hours.

EMPD spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng said the cause of the crash is unknown.

“Preliminary investigations found that a Tata travelling on the fast lane, lost control and crashed into steel barriers where an Opel was affected.

“The truck trying to avoid the crash swerved left and it flipped over a stationary Isuzu with no occupants. The Isuzu belonged to the freeway maintenance crew members who were working on site,” Mokheseng said.

A case of reckless and negligent driving has been opened by the EMPD Freeway Unit Officers at the Kempton SAPS.
