EMPD officers arrest woman accused of defrauding jobseekers

Officers also apprehended 13 pedestrians.

An operation led by the EMPD Freeway Unit on Tuesday resulted in the arrest of 13 pedestrians on the R21, followed by another arrest related to fraud.

Kobeli Mokheseng, spokesperson for EMPD, said the 13 men arrested were charged with being a source of danger on the freeway.

“At 7am, the 13 male pedestrians were found walking and idling on the stretch of Albertina Sisulu (R21) highway. The men cited they are waiting for lifts and some said they were walking to their nearby workplace.

“At about noon, officers drove into an unruly crowd encircling an undocumented female Zimbabwean national on West Street. She was accused of defrauding jobseekers by promising them work, while promoting a scam.

“The EMPD Freeway Unit officers stepped in.”
The 14 suspects were handed over to the SAPS and are expected to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court soon.
