Judges impressed by local writers

The judges concluded their judging and evaluations and also returned everything to the competition coordinators electronically.

Covid-19 meant that Writers 2000 ran its Annual Writing Competition differently this year.
For the first time, all entries were submitted electronically and sent to the judges in the same way.

The judges concluded their judging and evaluations and also returned everything to the competition coordinators electronically.

Judges for this year’s competition were Anthea Pretorius (poetry and haiku category), Sian Claven (fiction category), Anna Stroud (non-fiction category) and Marion Scher (Life’s Like That category).
“I commend every member of the circle who, for many months, have put in the hours to submit one or more entries to the competition,” said Anthea.

“Without your enthusiastic participation, there would be no competition.”
Anthea said different things inspire us and it is good to write about them before the feeling dissipates.

“Poems are therapeutic. They help us deal with painful things like death and illness.”

She commended entrants on the generally high standard of entries and the use of language and imagery.
For the haiku section, she noted that she had not marked anyone down who did not use the strict 5-7-5 syllable format as haiku rules have become less rigid.

In the fiction category, Sian noted that writing horror fiction has the same rules as writing other fiction but that here it is necessary to include elements of suspense.
She commended entrants for their skills but encouraged them to work on always ending their writing on a strong note.
Commenting on the non-fiction work Anna encouraged writers to spend time working on the title of their stories so that readers are compelled to pick it up.
