EMPD North Region Task Team and Thembisa precinct officers arrested three men for impersonating officers and attempted truck hijacking earlier today following a chase from Kempton Park to Thembisa.

They also face charges of failing to stop as instructed by officers in uniform and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
The arrests were made at about 2.10pm after EMPD members in Kempton Park noticed a white VW Polo sedan, thought to be an unmarked police vehicle, and three men in Gauteng Traffic Police uniform struggling with a man.

The EMPD members stopped to render help to what they thought were fellow law enforcers making an arrest.
The white VW Polo sedan had a portable dashboard blue light and was parked on the sidewalk, parallel with a truck transporting cosmetics.
“When EMPD members stopped, the truck driver screamed ‘I am being hijacked’. The trio jumped into the VW sedan and fled,” said EMPD spokesperson, Kobeli Mokheseng.
A chase ensued, while EMPD officers requested back-up.
The Polo travelling at high speed towards Sam Molele Drive in Thembisa area, lost control and crashed into a lamppost.
The three occupants fled on foot towards a nearby lake.
“EMPD officers cornered and arrested all three. The 9mm Vector and a 9mm CZ firearms and live rounds were confiscated.
“Officers also found two sports bags containing a ‘jamming’ device, SAPS and Gauteng Traffic Police uniforms including reflective jackets and a portable blue and emergency light.”
The truck driver was treated for shock by paramedics on the scene.
The VW Polo sedan used by the trio had false registration plates and was impounded.
